Privacy Rule
The HIPAA Privacy Rule establishes a set
of national standards to protect the privacy of certain health information that
can be linked to a specific person. These standards address the use and disclosure of
individuals' health information—called "protected health information," or PHI—by organizations subject to
the Privacy Rule, called "covered entities." The Privacy Rule also gives
patients certain rights over their health information, including rights to
examine and obtain a copy of their health records, and to request corrections.
